United will attempt to renegotiate the £43 million transfer fee they
agreed to pay Monaco for Radamel Falcao should they decide to keep the
striker beyond his season-long loan.
Falcao played the full 90 minutes in United’s
2-0 win at Queens Park Rangers – which piled the pressure on Harry
Redknapp, the QPR manager – but did not score even though he went close on
several occasions.
Redknapp was defiant afterwards – even claiming that he had been given
assurances over his future by the QPR chairman Tony Fernandes. “No, I don’t
worry about it,” Redknapp said.
“That’s their [the club’s] choice if they want to make a change. Because
someone writes in one newspaper everyone has to believe it. I spoke to Tony
Fernandes five times this week and he said: ‘What a load of nonsense.’ Who
do you believe an insider or the chairman? What will be will be.”
Because they are out of the FA Cup QPR now have a two-week break, during which
Redknapp’s future will be discussed. The board has to decide whether he can
stave off relegation, which would be a financial disaster
United have longer, until the end of the season, to decide whether to take up
the option to sign Falcao on a permanent basis with manager Louis Van Gaal
stating that the forward, 28, still has to prove he is worth retaining.
The terms of a deal – including the length of contract and wages for Falcao who earns £265,000 a week – were agreed when he moved on a season-long loan for a fee of €6 million (£4.6 million).
Falcao’s agent, Jorge Mendes, publicly queried last week why his client had not featured more since his move to Old Trafford. The Colombian has recovered from a cruciate injury but has struggled to recapture his best form.
Mendes implied that Falcao will not be short of offers. The Colombian will not return to Monaco and despite Mendes’ optimism he may struggle to find a club of United’s calibre willing to sign him. United are therefore considering whether, even if they decide to sign Falcao, they should renegotiate the terms of the deal with Mendes and with Monaco.
It is unlikely that Mendes, one of the most powerful agents in world football, would want to discuss again the terms but his options might be limited.
Meanwhile United have ruled out the prospect of sending Adnan Januzaj out on loan for the remainder of the season. The Belgian, 19, has barely featured under Van Gaal and is believed to have been keen on a move but has been told he will stay.
